The Art of the Burn
Smoked Grain is a collection of sculptural, hand-built furniture made in North Vancouver, Canada, from solid Douglas fir and cedar — local, indigenous wood species — shaped using Yakisugi, the Japanese technique of charring wood, also known as Shou Sugi Ban. The process starts with milling and building up the material, then sculpting and burning it in stages until a unique texture and form emerge. The result is a range of tables, benches, and one-of-a-kind pieces made for small spaces: quiet, striking additions to a room built around art and collections. Handmade by David Flynn.
