The Art of the Burn
Smoked Grain is sculptural, hand-built furniture made in North Vancouver, BC, from solid Douglas fir and cedar, both native to this coast. Every piece is shaped with Shou Sugi Ban (also called yakisugi), the Japanese technique of charring wood with fire.
I mill the wood and build it up, then sculpt and burn it in stages until the texture and form come through. The joinery uses no screws or metal fasteners, and no two pieces turn out the same.
The collection includes charred wood tables, benches and one-of-a-kind pieces sized for smaller homes. They're quiet, striking additions to a room built around art and collections. Designed and made by hand by David Flynn, architect and woodworker.
